A ten vehicle crash that closed the Pacific Highway at Tarro earlier this morning has seen two people treated by paramedics at the scene and later taken to hospital.

Fire and Rescue NSW also attended the crash near Hexham Bridge, freeing a male driver and his dog, after they were trapped in his truck.

The incident which took place at 6:32 on Thursday morning, is still causing traffic delays in both directions.

NSW Police have closed all lanes as they work to clear debris from the road.

EARLIER: New England Highway closed after major accident

Hunter motorists have been urged to avoid the New England Highway after a major accident between Tarro and Hexham this morning.

Multiple vehicles were involved in the incident and traffic is impacted in both directions.

All eastbound lanes are closed and westbound traffic is passing the crash site in the breakdown lane.

Emergency services and traffic crews were called to the scene at about 6.30am.

Four Paramedic road crews were dispatched and upon arrival, they assessed six patients, two of those were transported to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition.

NSW Ambulance Inspector Jason Saper said the paramedics “were confronted with a complex scene”.

“One patient was initially trapped, with the assistance of other emergency services we were able to safely extricate the patient and provide ongoing treatment,” he said.

“Paramedics did an excellent job treating multiple patients on a very busy road. We encourage motorists to drive with caution, especially in peak times.”

People are advised to avoid the area or consider using the M1 Pacific Motorway, Newcastle Link Road and Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Maitland Road.

Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution, allow for plenty of travel time and listen to directions.

Northbound motorists heading towards Hexham can use M1 Pacific Motorway, Newcastle Link Road, Newcastle Inner City Bypass and Maitland Road, however, traffic is extremely heavy.

Northbound motorists heading to Raymond Terrace and beyond can use M1 Pacific Motorway, Weakleys Drive, Glenwood Drive, Thornton Road/Railway Avenue/Edwards Avenue/Government Road, Raymond Terrace Road, William Bailey Street and Adelaide Street to join the Pacific Highway.

Southbound/westbound motorists should consider using Maitland Road, Newcastle Inner City Bypass, Newcastle Link Road and the M1 Pacific Motorway to travel between Hexham and Newcastle Interchange/Beresfield.
