Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea ready to return in May

SHARE

It’s time to “bake up a storm” and support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.

That’s the message from Hunter Cancer Council’s community relations coordinator Danielle Foster as the organisation counts down the days to the 19 May event.

“We’re very excited for the community to get back into Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea,” she said.

“The official day is on 19 May but anyone can register, it’s biggestmorningtea.com.au you can do it in May and June and we’re so excited for the Hunter to get baking with their community groups, colleagues and their families it is going to be excellent.”

The annual event raises funds for the charity’s vital work including its life-saving research, prevention, support programs and information.

It calls on people throughout the country to host a morning tea, collect donations and create awareness of the Cancer Council and the impact cancer can have on someone’s life.

This year, Danielle says the team is excited to see people back together after COVID-19 changed the way the event worked over the past two years.

“We can get back together now and we can bake up a storm,” she said.

“It’s going to be great across the Hunter and we want to see everyone get involved and obviously we are stoked with our ambassador – Reece Hignell from Cakeboi.”

Reece says he didn’t think twice about supporting the initiative.

“I got involved because like myself a lot of people all over the world are affected by cancer so when they first approached me I was keen straight away,” he said.

“I think for me anything in terms of awareness-raising and how you can give back is really important.

“I’m very willing to give back but I am not necessarily always aware of how to so if we can raise awareness by having a cup of coffee with your neighbour or at work and collect a few dollars, it goes a long way.”

The former MasterChef contestant says the best cake to have with tea or coffee is a tea cake.

Out of his range of cakes – that will be for sale on 19 May – he suggests the Persian Love Cake “because it is not too sweet, it’s a little spicy and really crunchy and with a cup of tea of coffee it will go really well”.
