Aussie boxer Jason Moloney claims bantamweight title

Australian boxer Jason Moloney is the new WBC silver bantamweight champion after recording a unanimous points decision over American Joshua Greer Jnr.

The judges awarded Moloney the fight 98-92, 98-92, 96-94 after the 30-year-old dominated Greer Jnr, easily landing more clean jabs and body blows throughout the 10-round tussle in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The victory improves Moloney’s record to 22-2 (18KO) and edges him ever closer to a world title fight.

Moloney’s twin brother Andrew will square off with Joshua Franco for the WBA’s world super flyweight title in Sunday’s main-event grudge match.

Moloney relinquished his belt to th American last June before being denied victory in a Las Vegas rematch in November in highly controversial fashion.

The Australian was universally hailed as the winner after the bout was stopped just two rounds in when Franco’s right eye closed up from an explosive left from Moloney.

But after a 30-minute video review, officials declared the fight a no-contest, claiming Franco’s injury was the result of an accidental head clash.

The third instalment in the pair’s rivalry will follow the much-anticipated professional debut of Muhammad Ali’s grandson Nico Ali Walsh.

Ali Walsh didn’t disappoint, needing less than two minutes into the scheduled four-round bout to destroy MMA fighter Jordan Weeks.

“Honestly, it seems like a lot of pressure but to me, it’s just my grandfather,” the 21-year-old Ali Walsh said.

“To everyone else, he is the greatest fighter to ever live. Maybe the greatest person.”

Honouring his legendary grandfather by sporting Ali’s original 1960s trunks, Ali Walsh pounded Weeks with a series of savage head shots that left the referee with no choice but to stop the fight after one minute 48 seconds.

“I’m never wearing these trunks again. They were my grandfather’s. It’s so emotional,” Ali Walsh said.

“This is a dream come true.”
