Athletes geared up for iconic Newcastle City Triathlon

SHARE

Almost 1,000 athletes are expected to showcase their skills in the Sparke Helmore Newcastle City Triathlon this weekend.

After 32 years, the iconic event continues to go from strength-to-strength.

And, it will be no different on Sunday 9 November from the Horseshoe Beach/Camp Shortland compound.

“It’s all about bringing together the community, highlighting the Newcastle landscape and supporting the triathletes,” H Events’ Paul Humphreys said.

“In 2025, we’re offering a four-race format – sprint (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run), aquabike (750m swim, 20km cycle), enticer (14+ years – 375m swim, 12km cycle, 2.5km run) and juniors.

“The latter will feature three age groupings: 7-9 years (100m swim, 3km cycle, 500m run); 10-11 years (150m swim, 6km cycle, 1km run); and 12-13 years (250m swim, 6km cycle, 2.5km run).

“The aim is to attract multiple generations of triathletes on the one day.

“We’ll also use live chip timing while race commentator Mike Rabbitt will bring the athletes home.

“Many competitors are raising funds for the Hunter Medical Research Institute or their chosen charity, via the peer-to-peer fundraising portal, as well.”

For the second consecutive year, the Newcastle City Triathlon has been recognised as a qualifying event, by AusTriathlon, for the World Triathlon Championships in Pontevedra in 2026.

“That’s a massive coup for us,” Humphreys said.

“With it comes a large number of triathletes from across Australia, hoping to book a spot in Spain.

“But, this event could not happen without the support of Bengalla, EJE, GWH, the Athlete’s Foot, Broadley Signs and the Bicycle Centre.

“A huge thank you goes to our event partner Sparke Helmore, their Triathlon Organising Committee and staff who volunteer all weekend, too.”

Entries are open to individuals who can complete three legs on their own (swim, cycle and run) and to relay teams (participants completing one leg each).
