As local roads re-open in Maitland, New England Highway remains closed

SHARE

While numerous local roads have re-opened to motorists in the Maitland LGA, one of the region’s busiest thoroughfares remains closed.

Transport for NSW is advising the New England Highway, between Melbourne Street and the old hospital roundabout, will continue to be inaccessible to everyone, owing to the recent flooding.

Unfortunately, that scenario has led to chaotic traffic scenes in the Maitland CBD in the past week, too.

And, it’s not expected to change in the immediate future.

“Due to the nature of heavy vehicles that travel this route, it’s unlikely to re-open until both lanes are totally free of water,” a spokesperson said.

“So, detours will stay in place.

“We urge drivers to utilise the Hunter Valley Expressway as an alternative option.”

In the first 14 days of the month, Maitland has been hit by more than 300mm of rain, causing endless headaches for council and Transport for NSW staff, regarding road repairs.

The deluge also forced council to cancel the city’s much-loved Burton Automotive Hunter Valley Steamfest, which was scheduled to take place on 30 and 31 July.
