Artists from across the region are being invited to help shape the future of one of Port Stephens’ busiest sporting hubs, with council calling for a major public artwork at the Tomaree Sports Complex.
Expressions of Interest (EOI) have opened for a mural that reflects the area’s local identity and natural surrounds, with the sporting facility set against the backdrop of Tomaree National Park.
The artwork will become a permanent feature of the site and is intended to welcome both locals and visitors alike.
Port Stephens mayor Leah Anderson said the project was part of a broader vision to strengthen the role of the premises as a key community space.
“The Tomaree Sports Complex is one of our largest community sporting facilities, supporting more than 3,000 local players across multiple codes, including soccer, cricket and AFL,” she explained.
The public art project forms part of further upgrades planned for 2026, following works completed in 2025 that focused on improving accessibility and facility standards.
Council believes the ongoing improvements align with its long-term masterplan and aim to position the complex as a leading regional sporting venue in NSW.
Cr Anderson admitted public art played an important role in bringing people together.
“We value integrating art into public spaces and celebrating our local stories,” she said.
“This piece will be a focal point of connection for residents and visitors.”
Artists interested in submitting an EOI can apply through the Port Stephens Council SmartyGrants portal.
Applications close on Friday 30 January, with shortlisted artists to be invited to develop a detailed concept design in the second stage of the selection process.
