ARTea’s honoured by nomination

A small gallery, complete with a garden, gift shop and tearoom, is having its moment in the sun.

ARTea’s, a finalist in this year’s Lake Mac Awards, is a team of dedicated volunteers that has been nominated for the Community Group of the Year honour.

“It feels amazing for the volunteers to be recognised and it is lovely that it has been so well supported by the community,” Swansea Community Cottage project manager Susan MacNeill said.

“These volunteers come and give their time out of the joy of connecting with the community, so it is really nice to say thank you to them.

“It’s just nice to see a whole range of volunteer groups [in our category] have their moment in the sun.”

The team joins Awesome Lake Mac, City Serve Incorporated (Hello Hunter), Southlake’s Incorporated, Swansea Meals on Wheels and The Big Hug Box.

The gallery and gift shop features works by local artists and hobbyists as well as local and pre-loved creations.

Its garden is home to natives, bush tucker, herbs, indoor plants and fresh veggies, which are all put up for sale, while the tearoom serves Devonshire Teas and light snacks by donation.

About 20 volunteers dedicate their time to help run the gallery and garden.

“Our volunteers range from gardeners, who help with general maintenance, mowing, veggies patches to those inside working in the kitchen and serving our customers and then into the gift shop and the art gallery,” Ms MacNeill said.

“We have some of our artists that volunteer in the art gallery and help curate the exhibitions.”

ARTea’s will know if it has taken out the top honour next month.

A COVIDSafe gala dinner will be hosted on Sunday 13 March at Belmont 16s.

Ms MacNeill added they were always looking for more volunteers.

“People can call us (4971 1229), send us an email ([email protected]) or go on our website or social media or they can even pop into ARTea’s where they can fill out the form,” she said.

“We have a whole range of ages, we have a 17-year-old and people in their 70’s.

“It is really welcoming, everyone feels like they are a part of a family here.”

To stay up to date with the group visit the ARTea’s Gallery & Garden Facebook page, or stop by and say hello at 28 Josephson Street, Swansea between 10 am and 2pm Wednesday to Saturday.
