Art Systems Wickham celebrates 10th year of business

SHARE

Art Systems Wickham is celebrating its 10th year of business in 2019 with a jam-packed program of outstanding exhibitions.

The gallery has, to date, held 180 exhibitions showcasing more than 600 talented local Newcastle and Hunter Valley artists.

Apparent Space by John Barnes is the current exhibition at the gallery, and it promises to be another success for the artist.

The exhibition presents an intriguing suite of new, non-representational paintings.

Barnes’ highly energised works continue his investigations into the use of colour and light to create imaginary, vibrant spaces that made his 2017 exhibition at ASW, First Light, particularly engaging.

The suite of paintings in Apparent Space shift from floating worlds of denselymassed opaque colour into radiant waves and bands of graduated tones which wellfrom distant cores and apparent horizons.

The flat surfaces have been activated to create humming and pulsating spaces, which surge and flow to the rhythms of their own internal energies. Apparent Space is a remarkable exhibition.

Barnes has combined all the colours of the spectrum, which often interact with Op-Pop intensity, simultaneously producing an ‘entrancing sense of timeless calm.’

Art Systems Wickham (ASW) is located at 40 Annie Street, Wickham. Gallery hours are 11am to 4pm, Friday to Sunday.

The gallery is located close to the Honeysuckle precinct and Newcastle’s bustling harbour and is available to successful applicants, both artists and curators.
