An act of inspiration

A group from Caves Beach Gym has shown age is no barrier during a performance on season nine of Australia’s Got Talent.

The 30 gym enthusiasts, who range in age from 50 to 88, appeared on the hit series in front of a judging panel that includes Grammy-nominated singer and TV personality Nicole Scherzinger, celebrity chef Manu Feildel, actress Lucy Durack and entertainer Shane Jacobson.

Caves Beach Gym manager Jenny Walker said the seniors wanted to send an inspirational message.

“Age is no barrier – that’s one of the things that kept coming up,” she said.

“A lot of these people are well into their 70s and 80s, so they wanted to show that illness and that sort of stuff is no barrier to stop them from doing what they want to, particularly in terms of exercise and feeling better.

“One of the ladies said to me: ‘This is the year for doing things that I’d never do’ and going on a reality television show was certainly one of them.”

The Active Over 50s team initially entered the 2019 series as a joke but, following auditions in Newcastle’s town hall, went on to gain selection.

Members then trained three times a week for almost a month, on top of regular workouts, to prepare for the two-and-a-half-minute act.

The colourful performance included a gym circuit on stage using the likes of kettlebells, aerobic step bench and weight plates, as well as interviews.

Ms Walker said she was proud of the group’s efforts.

Caves Beach Gym, which helped train them, is owned by Swansea District Baptist Church and operates as a not-for-profit.

“We’re only a little local gym but we’ve got great clients,” Ms Walker said.

“For some of them, it’s their only outing of the week and, as we get older, it’s more important to get moving.”

Australia’s Got Talent displays a wide range of mind-blowing acts every Sunday and Monday night from 7pm and 7.30pm respectively.

The winner is set to pocket $100,000 in prize money.
