The Newcastle Jets will kick off the 2024/25 A-League Women’s (ALW) season without Melina Ayres following the star forward’s sudden decision to take a break away from the game.
It’s a double blow to the Hunter club after the departure of leading goalscorer Sarina Bolden, who played a major role in the side’s run to the semi-finals, in August.
While the situation is not ideal for coach Ryan Campbell, with the team’s opening match against the Western Sydney Wanderers at No. 2 Sportsground on 3 November, Ayres’ “leave pass” has Newcastle’s blessing.
“We support Melina’s decision 100% and will welcome her back with open arms when she is ready to rejoin our ALW program,” Jets’ football general manager Ken Schembri said.
“Life as a professional women’s footballer is challenging, often combining ALW/NPLW seasons for year-round football.
“We are assisting Melina with her potential return to play and hope, with her taking this break now, it will prolong her football career when it resumes.”
Ayres, 25, is a four-time A-League Women’s Championship and two-time ALW Premiership striker.
Since her debut as a 16-year-old, she’s been a mainstay of the ALW competition.
After starring with Melbourne City, the Victorian plied her craft at the Melbourne Victory and Newcastle, often backing up her ALW commitments with NPLW and international club duties in the USA and Iceland.
So, she’s certainly earned some breathing space to focus on her wellbeing.
“Following nine consecutive back-to-back seasons, I have decided to take a break from football to reflect on the future,” Ayres said.
“I’m not retiring, I intend to play again.
“And, when I do, it will be with the Jets, as I have loved playing and living in Newcastle.”
It’s understood the Jets have not placed a timeframe on her return.
