ALW GALLERY: Jets turn attention to Maitland fortress

The Newcastle Jets hope a mid-season “shake-up” will reinvigorate the A-League Women’s (ALM) campaign.

Currently sitting in 10th spot on the ladder, five points outside the top six, the Ryan Campbell-coached outfit will base itself at Maitland over the next month.

It follows heartbreaking back-to-back losses to Sydney FC (2-1) and the Central Coast Mariners (2-0) in recent weeks.

The latest defeat to its F3 derby rivals means wins are a premium for Newcastle moving forward, especially with a play-off berth up for grabs.

The Jets will now turn their attention to making the Maitland Regional Sportsground a fortress, with three consecutive home matches in the Lower Hunter.

Newcastle tackles the Wellington Phoenix there on Sunday 4 February from 5pm, with another showdown against the Brisbane Roar at the same venue on Saturday 17 February (5pm).

The Jets then lock horns with the Perth Glory at Maitland on Sunday 3 March at 4pm.

“The plan was always to play three ALW games at the Regional Sportsground this season,” executive chairman Shane Mattiske said.

“It’s the first time that’s occurred.

“But, it is an important opportunity to bring top tier ALW to the Lower Hunter and for our fans to see more of the elite training base that our men and now women have been using.

“The Jets’ ALW side has been super exciting and highly-competitive in 2023/24.

“So, we’re looking forward to seeing strong support for them at Maitland.”
