The re-signing of Lachlan Bayliss and Kosta Grozos is almost the final piece of the puzzle for the Newcastle Jets ahead of the 2024/25 A-League season.
With just two spots in the ALM’s squad remaining, the Hunter-based players returned to the training paddock at Maitland this week with a spring in their collective step.
Following a big finish to 2023/24, as well as a new owner in Maverick Sports Partners, coach Rob Stanton admitted everyone was determined to hit the ground running as soon as possible.
“There’s a good feeling around the place,” he said.
“And, we’re all keen to see how we progress this year.
“One positive, we won’t have to talk about the club’s ownership now that it’s been sorted out.
“The coaching and playing staff can concentrate solely on football and what we need to do.
“That means climbing the ladder and becoming the best team in the league.”
Stanton indicated he wouldn’t rush to fill the vacant positions in the roster.
“I want the right people at Newcastle,” he said.
“But, admittedly, I’m looking for a couple who boast experience and will complement the youngsters in the team.”
Meanwhile, Bayliss extended his stay in Newcastle for another two seasons.
The midfielder, who rejoined the Jets from rivals Central Coast Mariners, made 13 appearances across all competitions for the club.
He previously spent time with the organisation’s Academy.
And, the 21-year-old is determined to reward the faith shown in him by the coaching staff.
“I’m very grateful to the club for extending my time,” Bayliss said.
“I love playing here, in front of our fans at McDonald Jones Stadium, and living in Newcastle.”
Stanton said he was more than happy to have Bayliss on board again.
“Lachlan continued to develop as the year progressed and he really started to find his feet towards the second half of the season,” he added.
“In 2024/25, he can push himself even further to be the best player he can be.
“He’s a guy I know the fans enjoy watching as he’s creative on the ball and relentless in defence without it.”
Like Bayliss, Grozos put pen to paper for a further two years.
Since joining the club in 2021, he’s donned the “gold” on 74 occasions, scoring three goals.
“I feel at home in Newcastle,” he said.
“I’ve enjoyed my time here and I want to continue my football journey at the club.
“This season I feel like I have established myself in the team.
“So, I’m looking forward to seeing how much more I can further develop as a player and help play a part in the Jets’ success moving forward.”
