ALM/ALW: Jets kick goals with Aspect Hunter students

They might be in the middle of their respective seasons… but Newcastle Jets players have still found time to give back to the community.

Members of the A-League Men’s (ALM) and A-League Women’s (ALW) squads – Zac Bowling, Josie Wilson, Sarina Bolden and Ryan Scott – recently scored goals with the enthusiastic pupils at Aspect Hunter School.

The quartet kicked a football around with the youngsters during a skills clinic at the Thornton locale.

“We relish the opportunity to engage with local schools,” goalkeeper Scott said.

“It’s a highlight for us, so we appreciate the support from Greater Bank to make it happen.

“Hanging out with the kids from Aspect Hunter School and seeing the smiles when they were scoring goals was extra special.

“I think we have just as much fun as they do.”

The visit was facilitated through Autism Spectrum Australia’s (Aspect) partnership with the Greater Charitable Foundation and its participation in the Jets:LEARN PDHPE program.

“The staff was really impressed with how the players interacted with the students,” teacher Joe Kelly said.

“The afternoon was really successful… and the kids had a ball.”

Greater Charitable Foundation chief executive officer Anne Long said it was wonderful to join forces with Aspect.

“We first partnered with them in the roll-out of their Early Intervention Readiness Program,” she explained.

“Since then, we’ve also provided financial literary workshops through the Greater Bank Finance Academy and supported Aspect Hunter School’s Work Education and Employment Skills Program.

“It’s a joy for us to offer these students the chance to kick a ball around with their local football heroes.”

Meanwhile, on the playing paddock, Newcastle’s ALM squad, buoyed by the return of striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos, meets the Wellington Phoenix at Sky Stadium on Saturday 9 December while the ALW outfit, refreshed after a week’s break, tackles the Cortnee Vine-led Sydney FC at home, No. 2 Sportsground, on Sunday 10 December.
