AGL seeking community feedback on Liddell transition

SHARE

AGL is inviting residents across the Upper Hunter to participate in a short survey, which seeks input on the planned closure of the Liddell Power Station, as well as the site’s future opportunities.

Since announcing the retirement of Liddell in 2015, the organisation has been working with local stakeholders and the wider community to plan for the transition of the site located between Muswellbrook and Singleton.

AGL CEO Markus Brokhof said the Upper Hunter had played an important role in supporting Liddell to annually power more than one million average Australian family homes.

“We are very proud to be part of the community and as we prepare for Liddell’s retirement,” he added.

“So, we want to hear from the people who make this region what it is.

“To ensure we look after our employees, their families and the local community it is critical we hear their thoughts and wishes for the future, as well as any concerns they may have.

“Our transition program is about ensuring the safe closure of Liddell, supporting our people and preparing other sources of generation with a lower carbon footprint to continue delivering reliable electricity.

“We are transforming our generation sites, with Liddell leading the way, becoming a low-carbon Integrated Industrial Energy Hub, which will include solar storage systems, grid-scale batteries and a waste to energy facility.

“These plans will provide essential jobs and economic activity to the region while also supporting Australia’s energy transition and AGL’s Climate Statement commitments, including net-zero emissions by 2050.

“I really encourage everyone to take part and play a role in shaping the Hunter’s energy future.”

The survey will be open from Tuesday 14 September to Monday 4 October.

In August 2019, following an independent assessment, AGL informed AEMO the first unit at Liddell will close in April 2022.

The remaining three units will close in April 2023, supporting system reliability throughout the 2022-23 summer months.
