AFLHCC: Panthers pounce on season opener

SHARE

The Terrigal Avoca Panthers started the 2021 AFL Hunter Central Coast (AFLHCC) season pretty much the same way as they finished last year’s competition – with a win.

In a grand final replay, the Black Diamond Cup Men’s premiers accounted for fierce rivals Newcastle City Blues 15.10-100 to 9.9-63 at Hawkins Oval last weekend.

And, it was the Roach boys who led from the front, especially in the second half.

Michael and Jason each kicked four goals with Angus Quail booting a further three.

Sam Ellis chipped in with two majors while James Webster and Nathan Belbin landed one apiece.

The Blues began strongly on the back of Keegan Mason’s and Mitchell Crawford’s efforts up front.

With the pair knocking over five goals between them, Newcastle City looked set to cause an upset with the combatants locked at 6.4-40 at the long break.

However, the Panthers surged ahead in the final couple of quarters to secure the victory.

The Roaches were well-supported by Jack Grimmond, Harrison Bond, Jack Webster and Jayson Van Dan.

For the Blues, Connor Bradbury, Connor Haswell, Joshua Taylor, Daniel Steele, Mason and Crawford shone in a losing outfit.

In other fixtures, the Killarney Vale Bomber upstaged the Gosford Tigers 15.13-103 to 9.9-63, the Cardiff Hawks hammered the Nelson Bay Marlins 25.21-171 to 2.2-14, the Warners Bay Bulldogs proved too good for the Maitland Saints 21.15-141 to 4.5-29 and the Singleton Roosters enjoyed the bye.

It was better luck for the Newcastle City Black Diamond Cup Women’s side in its first match since the grand final.

The 2020 champions pounced on the Panthers 14.9-93 to 2.2-14.

Meanwhile, the Saints overran the Bulldogs 7.8-50 to 6.1-37 and the Hawks crushed the Lake Macquarie Dockers 24.12-156 to 1.0-6.

The Bombers and Wyong Lakes Magpies has the weekend off.
