There’s been action aplenty at the Lake Macquarie Croquet Centre over the past month.
The state-of-the-art Glendale complex recently hosted a tournament, featuring three teams from Toronto – Wagtails, Dolphins and Willows – as well as line-ups from Maitland, Nelson Bay, Newcastle and EDSACC (Bateau Bay).
Each match, which is timed, comprised two players participating in singles and a pair of doubles in a best-of-three series.
“It’s fair to say, it was well-fought between the combatants,” Toronto Croquet Club publicity officer Liz McDonald said.
“In the end, the Wagtails prevailed 3-0.
“But, when all is said and done, Toronto was the winner.”
The venue then staged the NSW Golf Croquet Open Singles Championships from 11 to 14 April.
Primed to take a shot at the title were five different Sydney clubs, as well as Maitland, Port Macquarie, Nelson Bay, Belconnen, Queanbeyan, Canberra, Coutts Crossing, Ballina (Cherry Street), Newcastle National Park and hosts Toronto.
“We were thrilled to have this event at the Lake Macquarie Croquet Centre,” McDonald said.
“It consisted of four blocks, each with nine players, which totalled 36 entries.
“That allowed the participants to contest eight matches apiece.
“Following the qualifying blocks, the competition entered a best-of-three knockout, plus consolation rounds, with the final being live-streamed.
“The final resulted in an absorbing battle between Mark Scruton (Canberra) and Peter Landrebe (Cammeray).
“With an eager crowd watching on, the showdown went down to the wire.
“However, Mark came out on top, winning 2-1.”
