A sight to sea

Sometimes you need a change in perspective.

For instance, seeing the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie coastline from the water, when we’re used to seeing it on dry land, will give you a whole new appreciation of the place we call home.

That’s exactly the illuminating experience Coast XP’s new Adventure Tour offers, which this journalist was lucky enough to encounter first-hand.

The Newcastle-based tourism operator, which departs from Honeysuckle’s Harbour Square Boat Dock, takes passengers as far south as Catherine Hill Bay in its custom-built rigid inflatable vessel, Atmos.

Caves at Caves Beach.

The two-and-a-half-hour tour takes in parts of Lake Macquarie that are only accessible by boat, including huge sea caves near Pinny Beach, an isolated inlet known as Shark Bay and Moon Island, off Swansea Heads.

The region’s tallest coastal cliffs at Dudley, towering more than 90 metres above sea level, are another highlight, as well as an array of wildlife.

And then there are iconic locations, such as the Catherine Hill Bay jetty, Merewether and Newcastle ocean baths and Nobbys headland, which are just as magnificent when seen in a new light.

Coast XP founder and managing director, Dominic May, aged just 24, said it was a pleasure to show off the region to locals and visitors alike.

The Adventure Tour complements the already-popular Cruise Tour, Sunset Sessions and whale watching on offer.
