A new chapter for Newcastle’s historic venue

SHARE

Perched high above Newcastle Harbour, Fort Scratchley is best known for its historic value… however, it’s now gaining a new reputation.

The landmark site has become one of the city’s most distinctive function centres, celebrated for food that showcases the Hunter and views that are hard to match.

The Fort Scratchley Function Centre was recently named a finalist in the 2025 Awards for Excellence for regional NSW event and convention centre catering.

Guests can expect to step into bright, open rooms with panoramic views and enjoy a menu that showcases the region’s finest produce.

A crowd favourite is the Binnie Beef wagyu crostini, followed by freshly-shucked Port Stephens oysters matched with a Hunter Valley wine.

Wagyu farmer Steve Binnie says patience makes the difference.

“We don’t push the cattle,” he says.

“The flavour becomes denser, and it really jumps off the plate.”

When it comes to wedding celebrations, Fort Scratchley has an eye for detail, too.

Clarissa and Sam, who chose this venue for their special day, said the standout was the food.

Highlights included pork belly with ponzu and a native pepperberry-crusted lamb rack, all enjoyed against the ocean backdrop.

Looking ahead to 2026, this sought-after venue is adding complementary oyster bars or cocktails on arrival for social events and post conference drinks as well as canapés upgrades.
