‘A letter to all the stepmums this Mother’s Day’

SHARE

Each year on Mother’s Day we honour the hardworking mums in our lives with lunches, gifts and hugs.

While it is generally considered a celebratory day, for many it is a complicated event filled with complex emotions.

Newcastle’s Kris Byrnes is stepmum to two girls.

She has written a heartfelt letter to acknowledge the important role they play in the family and wider community; giving a voice to a type of motherhood that is often left out of the conversation.

Blended, Not Broken by Kris Byrnes

Dear Stepmum, I see you.

I see how you love with your whole heart, even though for half the moments, the milestones, the memories, they are split.

A division between two… two homes. Two families.

The wholeness of your love, being pulled away as you say your goodbyes until next week.

The house gets quieter.

Your mind is a little louder: Did they pack their water bottle? What happened with that friend? That teacher? I guess I’ll wait to see.

You tuck them in knowing half their heart still lives in another home.

And yet, you never make them choose.

You just love them through it.

No strings. No scorecard.

Just presence.

I see how you smile through the ache when Mother’s Day feels complicated, when you’re too the one packing school lunches but not always the one they celebrate.

And still you pour the cereal, braid the hair, give the advice, and kiss the foreheads.

This isn’t a broken home.

Like other people like to say.

It’s a layered one.

Stitched with second chances, sewn with golden threads of grace, anchored in something fierce – choice.

You didn’t grow them in your belly but you grew to love them anyway.

Kris Byrnes

Not out of duty.

Out of devotion.

And still… some days you wonder if you’ll ever be enough.

If your hugs land the same.

If your voice feels like safety… If your love can reach into the cracks you didn’t cause, but now carry.

Your love has probably been questioned, by people who’ve never had the privilege of playing your role.

Just remember,

It’s not by the ones who matter.

And deep down, you know they’ll never question it.

Because love like yours?

It’s felt in the little things,

The back tickles.

The kitchen bench where the best smiles sit.

The family holidays remembering every little thing that they might need, sick bay calls, and your on your way…

The endless sports, work and friends pickups and drop offs, where our favourite conversations take place.

You can’t give them a mother’s love, not the kind the world defines.

But what you give is just as real.

It’s steady.

It’s a quiet strength.

It’s wide open arms at 2am.

You stepped into the storm not to fix it… but to hold them steady while they found calm.

And some days, you carry the heaviness of healing his heart too, a heart you didn’t break…

Loving him through wounds you didn’t make.

You’ll choose to help mend them all anyway.

Your love is not a backup plan.

It’s a bold, beautiful choice.

You, dear step-mum, are not second best.

You are something entirely different

not more, not less.

Your stepchildren, they aren’t halves.

They aren’t visitors in your love.

This isn’t a secondhand story.

It’s  masterpiece of messy.

A mosaic of more.

One name.

One story.

All hearts are all in.

So when the world whispers “broken,”

I hope you whisper back

Look again.

Because of this love?

It’s blended.

Not broken.

And better because of it.
