$800,000 on offer for Hunter charities, community groups

Local not-for-profit and charity organisations working to overcome disadvantage or create opportunities for marginalised or isolated people in the Hunter can apply for funds through the latest Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation funding round.

The foundation has $800,000 on offer to assist new or existing projects in the Hunter Valley, Central West, Central Coast, New England, Mid-North Coast and Northern Rivers regions.

Newly-appointed Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation executive officer Carly Bush said with the impacts of COVID-19 hitting support organisations and charities hard, communities needed funding more than ever.

“Since taking up the role, I’ve seen the amazing effect local groups can have in their community if given some financial support,” she explained.

The foundation has provided more than $10 million to projects in the Hunter region since 2003.

Some of the latest ones to make a difference to people and communities include:

  • $70,000 to We Care Connect to provide packages for local families living in poverty containing clothes, nappies, bedding, cots, prams, car seats, toys, books and other essentials;
  • $43,000 to Dementia Australia to provide virtual reality technology and training to help carers see the world through the eyes of people living with dementia; and
  • $40,000 to LIVEfree Project’s Smile & Thrive Dental program for vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

“This latest grant round of $800,000 means the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation will have provided $25 million in funding to support more than 520 initiatives,” Ms Bush said.

“Some charities and regional communities aren’t eligible or can’t access government funding and infrastructure, so we try fill those gaps.

“We’re keen to support initiatives that rewrite the future of people in need, now and for generations to come.

“Especially those with a focus on health, young people and social wellbeing.”

Ms Bush said many charities didn’t have resources to make funding applications, so the foundation made applying online straight forward.

An online workshop on March 24 and the organisation’s website will give charities more information on how to apply.

The Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation was created almost 20 years ago as a gift from Newcastle Permanent Building Society to the community.

Ms Bush joins the foundation from Newcastle Permanent, where she has worked in several roles since 2011.

Applications for the latest round close on 14 April.
