Hunter Street brothel looking for new operators

A Newcastle brothel is looking for a new tenant, just 18 months after the current landlord completed extensive renovations at the address.

Located on Hunter Street in one of Newcastle’s oldest buildings, the 1880-built Shedden’s Building has been home to salacious happenings since the early 1990s, under several different operators.

Alexander Shedden and his sons are thought to have helped shape the character of the
commercial shipping and industrial business centre of Newcastle.

The three-storey structure boasts six rooms with varying amenity options, including a ground floor kitchen, laundry, lounge room and open courtyard area.

Kitchen facilities and three separate rooms on the first floor, and a top floor with three rooms and a shared bathroom.

Since it was advertised on the real estate market earlier this month it has attracted the interest of a range of prospective tenants, both local and Sydney-based.

It has been known by a few different names over the years, including Gigi’s Gentleman’s Club, 758 Hunter, and Number 758.

It is currently operating as Madame Perfection, or Madame P’s, its website boasting “wonderful rooms are clean and fresh with implemented COVID hygiene. Clean fresh towels and sheets in modern interior designed air-conditioned rooms.”

The business was last sold by Colliers in January 2022 for $935,000, advertised as being inclusive of a three-year tenancy agreement.

At the time it drew a net income of $62,426* per annum plus GST.

The owner undertook extensive renovations soon after purchase.

Prior to that it changed hands in December 2018 for $650,000, and before that it had been with the one owner since February 2006, when the address was purchased for $352,000.

The current rent is $73,000 per year plus outgoings of $23,000 per annum.

Although new tenants could opt for change, Movable real estate agent Jason Morris says the address is operating as an established brothel.

“The best use for the building is adult services as it is set up for that and is approved as such,” he said.
