Newcastle designer Tim Neve takes on major Mayfield reno

Built in 1926, the Hipwell building in Mayfield has lived many lives… and soon it will be taking on a new form.

Once home to a holocaust-survivor’s tailoring business, the structure at 5 Hanbury Street most recently gained attention after it was the site of a major police raid.

After it had its roof blown off in a storm in 2015, its then-owner, a reality television show producer, decided to abandon his plans for the address.

Cue Newcastle-based interior designer Tim Neve, who is taking on the dilapidated warehouse as his biggest renovation project to date.

He hopes to breathe new life into the historic premises, by restoring the existing shopfront and residence.

“All I could see was potential,” Tim says.

“It will be the perfect home for my business and myself. I’m so excited to refresh the spaces so they can live on as they have always operated.”

Tim purchased the property prior to auction in March for $650,000.

He plans to renovate the address and document the experience for curious onlookers.

“Everyone seems to love a good ‘before and after,” he laughs.

“So definitely follow along and watch the process unfold on social media, as this is going to be a massive transformation.”

Tim has titled the project ‘Hipwell Haus’ paying homage to the original creator storekeeper R.W. Hipwell, who’s name features on the building’s original 1926 façade.

The bones of the building, he says, include impressive open plan spaces, soaring high ceilings and large window openings, giving him plenty of scope to work with internally.

He plans to mix the existing industrial features of the building, like exposed brick, with his signature style of interiors featuring evocative colour schemes and textured materials.

Tim realises that a project of this size won’t happen overnight.

Instead, he is embracing the many months of labour ahead, by documenting the process on his Instagram profile @timneve.

Broken down into a series of renovation stages, the project will feature local businesses and products as they are used in the renovation project.
