Construction of a major student accommodation project at the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus has moved a step closer.
Hansen Yuncken has been appointed as principal contractor for the new 450-bed development.
The eight-storey building will include a mix of single studio apartments and six-bedroom shared living clusters.
It is designed to cater to different student needs and budgets.
The building is targeting a 5-Star Green Star sustainability rating and is expected to open for Semester 2, 2028.
University of Newcastle Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO said the project would help ease housing pressures for students.
“At a time when rental affordability is a real challenge, this development is about more than beds – it’s about providing safe, supportive and affordable living options so more students can fully participate in university life,” he said.
Professor Zelinsky said students who live on campus are more likely to remain engaged with their studies.
“We know that where students live can have a profound impact on their university experience,” he said.
“Our data shows that students who live on campus are more likely to stay engaged with their studies and achieve stronger academic outcomes.”
University data shows students living on campus have a retention rate of 86.8 per cent.
That compares with 76.9 per cent for students living elsewhere.
They also record a slightly higher course pass rate, at 89.8 per cent compared with 87.8 per cent.
The appointment follows approval of the Regionally Significant Development Application in April.
Hansen Yuncken is also delivering the university’s City Student Accommodation project.
Designed by Lyons Architects, the development will include communal study areas, consultation rooms, 101 bicycle parking spaces with e-bike charging, and three electric vehicle charging bays.
Professor Zelinsky said the investment in student accommodation across the university’s Callaghan, Newcastle City and Gosford campuses would make the university a more attractive choice for future students.
“The appointment of Hansen Yuncken as principal contractor marks a significant milestone in progressing this important project toward delivery,” he said.
