38 new COVID-19 cases in HNELHD

The rate of COVID-19 transmission remains high in the Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) after 38 new cases were detected in the 24 hours to 8pm on Thursday night.

The infections take the total number in the current outbreak to 600 with 373 cases still active.

Of the number announced today, 14 are in the Newcastle LGA, eight are in Lake Macquarie, seven are in Cessnock, five have been detected in the Maitland LGA, two are in Port Stephens, one is in Muswellbrook and the final case is in the Mid Coast LGA.

In Newcastle three infections are in Merewether and each of the following suburbs added one case: Mayfield, Wallsend, Elermore Vale, Newcastle, Hamilton South, New Lambton, Jesmond, Islington, Kotara South, Newcastle West and Warabrook.

Three detections in Cardiff, two in Toronto, one in Mount Hutton, another in Morisset and one in Cooranbong have added eight to Lake Macquarie’s total.

All bar one of the cases in Cessnock are in Weston, with the other infection in Branxton.

Maitland recorded three discoveries in East Maitland and one in both Rutherford and Thornton.

In Port Stephens, Raymond Terrace detected two while Muswellbrook also added a case. The Mid-Coast LGA found one infection in Darawank.

Ten of the cases remain under investigation and 19 were infectious in the community.

HNELHD is providing care to 19 patients in hospital, with one in ICU.

It comes as NSW reported 1,043 new locally acquired cases and the deaths of eleven people overnight.

Of the deaths, one person was in their 40s, two in their 50s, one in their 60s, six in their 80s, and one was in their 90s.

Ten people were unvaccinated, and one had received two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. All had underlying medical conditions.
