Cessnock City mayor Jay Suvaal is one step closer to fulfilling one of his key priorities since being elected in the role.

Council this week announced it had been successful in securing $3 million in funding for a shared pathway, which will connect Bridges Hill Park to Wine Country.

The project, funded by the NSW Government in association with Cessnock City Council under the NSW Public Spaces Legacy Program, aims to deliver safe and quality areas of public open space.

The development will start at the popular Bridges Hill Park and finish at St Phillip’s Christian College on Lomas Lane at Nulkaba.

In addition, it’ll include a 2.5-metre shared pathway linking Allandale Road to Nulkaba Public School.

Cr Suvaal admitted he was looking forward to seeing the project come to fruition.

“I’m excited because it will provide better connectivity in the LGA through shared pathways,” he said.

“Upon completion, the 2.5-metre wide, five-kilometre corridor is expected to be enjoyed by cyclists and pedestrians and it will also be wheelchair-friendly.

“The fact that people will be able to walk or ride safely into the Cessnock CBD from Nulkaba is just fantastic.

“It will also promote a healthier and more active lifestyle for those living in the area.

“Instead of always jumping in the car to get into town or to drop the kids to school, locals can consider cycling or walking.”

The project will include end-of-trip/mid-trip bicycle storage infrastructure, water bottle filling stations, seating and shelters, too.

Quotes are currently being sought for the survey and design of the pathway.

Construction is scheduled to start mid-year once tenders have been awarded.
