Most people love a game of mini golf.
But, local radio host Joel Gosper and Rippit Golf’s Mark Forster are taking it to the next level this week… all in the name of charity.
The pair will play 1,000 mini golf games in Broadmeadow from 5pm on Wednesday 20 November until 5pm the following day.
Their 24-hour feat aims to encourage residents to donate 1,000 presents to John Hunter Children’s Hospital, John Hunter Hospital School and organisation Jenny’s Place.
Donations will be accepted throughout the challenge, with toys suitable for kids to play in bed recommended, such as puzzles, crafts, matchbox cars and Lego.
Jenny’s Place, which offers domestic violence and homelessness support, is also collecting gifts for older children, teenagers and families, including gift cards and common household necessities.
Gosper, host of the drive show on NEWFM, will broadcast for the full 24 hours, too, making it extra challenging.
“The harder it is for me, hopefully the more inspiring it is for the people of Newcastle to offer their support for those families who are doing it tough, especially around Christmas time,” he said.
Joining Gosper and Forster will be representatives from John Hunter and Jenny’s Place, as well as players from the Newcastle Jets.
“People are doing it tough for a variety of reasons but no one should have to miss out on the holiday,” he told the Newcastle Weekly.
“For kids who are in hospital around Christmas time, they might be in there for the whole thing, so they miss out on experiences that they would normally have.
“It’s just terrible that they can’t be a part of that special time with their family.
“Also, no kid or woman should put in that circumstance of having to flee their home due to domestic violence (DV).
“So, it’s through no fault of their own that they can’t supply something to their children.”
Anyone who donates to the initiative will be rewarded with a free round of mini golf as well as go into a raffle to win a $250 Rippit Golf gift voucher.
