Four Port Stephens organisations providing food relief and emergency assistance have received a funding boost to help meet cost-of-living pressures.
The government has announced $20,000 in stop-gap funding, which will be shared between Hope Cottage, Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Service (PSFANS), Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre and Warlga Ngurra.
Each organisation plays a different role in supporting vulnerable residents, with the funding aimed at helping them continue delivering essential services as more people seek assistance.
Hope Cottage and Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre provide emergency food relief and rely heavily on donated groceries to stock their shelves.
Rising demand has placed increasing pressure on available supplies.
Warlga Ngurra’s Meals for Mob program brings women together each week to prepare nutritious meals for families and people living in temporary accommodation.
PSFANS offers emergency financial assistance to eligible families, along with food hampers for those experiencing hardship.
Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington said the additional funding would provide practical support to organisations already making a significant difference in the community.
“With cost-of-living pressures being felt deeply by local families, this funding is intended to help trusted organisations support more locals who are struggling,” she said.
“I’m pleased to have secured this stop-gap funding to deliver practical cost-of-living help for people who need it most in Port Stephens.”
Ms Washington said she had recently visited each organisation to thank staff and volunteers for their ongoing work.
“It’s been wonderful to catch-up with the caring teams at Tomaree Neighbourhood Centre, PSFANS, Warlga Ngurra and Hope Cottage recently, thank them for their work and provide a small boost to their budget so they can make even more of a difference,” she said.
The funding is expected to help the four organisations continue providing relief and assistance at a time when many Port Stephens households are feeling the pinch.
