$2.8m promise to secure future of Survivor’s R Us

It was cause for double celebration at Survivor’s R Us in Cardiff on Tuesday morning.

Not only did the popular service celebrate its eighth anniversary on 1 April, the organisation also received a $2.8 million promise from the federal government to support its future.

As such, if Labor regains power on 3 May, it’ll ensure the not-for-profit boasts a permanent home, too.

Shortland MP Pat Conroy and Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery made the announcement… to the delight of founder Ann-Maria Martin.

“This is such exciting news,” she said.

“Following an increase in rent, our accommodation has been placed at risk.

“So, we’re eternally grateful to secure much-needed finance to purchase a long-lasting site.

“It’ll allow us to help many more people in the community.”

Survivor’s R Us provides essential support for victims and survivors of domestic violence (DV), homelessness and unemployment.

It also offers counselling, runs a food warehouse and ensures its clients have access to life’s basics when times are tough.

“Survivor’s R Us plays a critical role in assisting some of the most vulnerable people in our community,” Mr Conroy said.

“I’m privileged to have worked with them for a number of years now.

“Labor is committed to supporting victims and survivors of domestic and family violence in every way that we can.

“During a cost-of-living crisis, these services are more important than ever.

“I want to thank everyone at Survivor’s R Us for the important work they do for our community.”
