$171m investment to boost solar manufacturing, jobs in Hunter

A joint $171 million investment is expected to boost local solar manufacturing and create jobs in the Hunter.

That’s according to Minister for Climate Change and Energy Chris Bowen during a visit to the region on Tuesday 2 December.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) grant will enable the establishment of a 500MW per annum solar module manufacturing facility at Black Hill, with the funding supporting the development of the Hunter Valley Solar Foundry project, an initiative of the Sunman Group.

Once established, it’ll be the largest producer of solar photovoltaic (PV) modules in Australia, and the only one in NSW, delivering world-leading products to residential, commercial and utility customers around the country.

“This is an important milestone in the nation’s energy transition,” Sunman founder Dr Zhengrong Shi said.

“As a proud Australian and a solar expert trained at the University of NSW, it’s been my long-held ambition to establish solar module manufacturing in Australia.

“It’s my hope, that over time, the foundry supports the foundation of a vertically-integrated solar supply chain in Australia.”

The venture, subsidised by the Commonwealth and state, is expected to deliver about 200 construction jobs and more than 100 ongoing positions once the plant is at full capacity.

An advanced manufacturing training program will be explored in collaboration with TAFE NSW to build a skilled local workforce, alongside a First Nations recruitment strategy and scholarship initiative to support renewable energy careers.

“When it comes to powering Australia’s future, nothing beats our sun and our solar know-how,” Mr Bowen said.

“That’s why bringing more solar manufacturing to our shores is so critical for unlocking our future as a renewable-energy superpower… and securing the jobs of the future.

“By backing this project in the Hunter, we’re helping turn Australian innovation into industrial strength.

“We are creating good local jobs, strengthening our supply chains and building a Future Made in Australia.”

The proposed facility aims to produce a range of solar PV modules for use in domestic and international markets, including Sunman’s proprietary enhanced Architecture Ready Composite (eArc) modules, which replace traditional glass with durable polymers, making them up to 70% lighter, easier to transport and faster to install.

Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley admitted the announcement was a “fantastic boost” for the region.

“It will generate more than 300 positions in the workforce… and cement the Hunter’s place at the heart of Australia’s clean-energy future.

“Investing in renewable manufacturing here means more opportunities for local workers, stronger regional industries and keeping more of the clean-energy supply chain right here in New South Wales.

“This project shows exactly what can be achieved when governments back innovation and back the Hunter.

“Good jobs, new skills and long-term economic growth for our communities.”
