Planning for a new westbound flyover at one of Maitland’s most notorious intersections is progressing, with investigation works to begin next week.
The $100 million upgrade at the Cessnock Road and New England Highway roundabout is being fully funded by the Australian Government and is aimed at easing congestion, improving safety and supporting future growth between Maitland and Cessnock.
An eastbound flyover is already in place, with the latest project set to deliver a westbound connection over the roundabout.
From Monday 31 August, Transport for NSW will begin geotechnical and survey investigations on and around the New England Highway at the Cessnock Road intersection.
The work is expected to continue for up to three months, weather permitting.
Investigations will include detailed surveys of the road surface, road corridor and drainage, along with locating underground services and examining geotechnical conditions.
Most work will take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Some night work may also be required between 6pm and 6am from Sunday to Thursday.
The proposed upgrade is expected to improve travel times for motorists, support freight movements and help accommodate housing growth along the Maitland to Cessnock corridor.
Transport for NSW will continue consulting with the community and stakeholders as planning progresses.
